Google publishes Inclusion Guidelines for Webmasters, an extensive online guide to ensure that any website that houses scholarly work is optimized to be discovered and indexed by Google Scholar. Google Scholar does not provide a formal submission or indexing request tool like Google Search Console does for regular websites. However, there are indirect ways to encourage Google Scholar to crawl and index your scholarly content:

  • Upload your article to an institutional repository or a preprint server (ex. arXiv). These are more likely to be crawled regularly.
  • Ensure each article has the full text or abstract publicly visible and clear metadata (author's name, title, publication, date.)
  • Link your article from your profile in the. Faculty Directory. Inbound links can help Google Scholar discover the content.
  • After posting, periodically search Google Scholar by title or author to see if the content has been indexed.

Being indexed by Google Scholar is the first step for an article to count toward your H-Index. But for it to actually increase your H-Index, it must be added to your profile and cited by other indexed sources.
