Open Educational Resources: Open Books

Through the Humanities Open Book Program, Cornell University Press digitized more than 100 titles in the fields of anthropology, classics, political science, literary criticism and more. These books are among those now available on Cornell Open, an open access portal for both new and classic out-of-print titles from its catalog.

Titles are typically produced under an Attribution-Noncommercial-No Derivative Works 3.0 Creative Commons (CC) License, which allows for specific, noncommercial use. So as long as you attribute your use properly and follow the terms of the Creative Commons license, you don’t need additional permissions to use these works.

DOAB is a community-driven discovery service that indexes and provides access to scholarly, peer-reviewed open access books and helps users to find trusted open access book publishers. All DOAB services are free of charge and all data is freely available. (49,183 academic peer-reviewed books from 690 publishers.)

GALILEO Open Learning Materials brings together open educational resources throughout the University System of Georgia, including open textbooks and ancillary materials. Most works hosted in GALILEO Open Learning Materials have a Creative Commons license, allowing the reuse, redistribution, remix, and revision of these materials.

The LibreTexts mission is to unite students, faculty and scholars in a cooperative effort to develop an easy-to-use online platform for the construction, customization, and dissemination of open educational resources (OER) to reduce the burdens of unreasonable textbook costs to our students and society.

Luminos is University of California Press’s Open Access publishing program for monographs. With the same high standards for selection, peer review, production and marketing as our traditional program, Luminos is a transformative model, built as a partnership where costs and benefits are shared.

Milne Library Publishing at SUNY Geneseo manages and maintains Milne Open Textbooks, a catalog of open textbooks authored and peer-reviewed by SUNY faculty and staff. The SUNY Community textbooks series is a venue for SUNY faculty to share their already published openly licensed educational material.

MIT Press is one of the largest and most distinguished university presses in the world and a leading publisher of books and journals at the intersection of science, technology, art, social science, and design. MIT Press Open supports a variety of open access funding models for select books, including monographs, trade books, and textbooks.

OAPEN promotes and supports the transition to open access for academic books by providing open infrastructure services to stakeholders in scholarly communication. We work with publishers to build a quality-controlled collection of open access books and provide services for publishers, libraries, and research funders in the areas of hosting, deposit, quality assurance, dissemination, and digital preservation.

Textbooks in the Open Textbook Library are considered open because they are free to use and distribute, and are licensed to be freely adapted or changed with proper attribution.
