Useful Search Tips

Using services like Data Axle, Mergent and Privco produce neat, uniform looking reports, but the data isn't always complete or applicable to your research. While they may be using these same government sources, some of the results you uncover may be things that were intentionally excluded from those databases.
This search tool is used for federal agencies only. If you wish to search for business information by state, there are links on the Business Entity Search by State page.
Remember: private businesses do not file 10-K's with the SEC. However, private businesses may have partnerships with publicly owned businesses who do file 10-K's. These public business filings may offer a glimpse into the finances/structure/staff of their private partners.
Put business names in quotes so they are searched as phrases, not individual words. (Ex. "Tennessee Fried Turkey")
If you are getting too many results from agencies that you aren't interested in, add "-site:xxx.gov" (replace xxx with the correct domain suffix) after your search term. For example, if you wanted to remove the Environmental Protection Agency from your result, add -site:epa.gov after your search term.
These searches only allow you to filter by relevance and date, so adding additional keywords beyond the business name will help narrow down your results to a more useful and manageable size.
